Exercise 4

Listen to this piece by the composer Mussorgsky. It’s called Pictures at an Exhibition and was originally written for piano.

and here is the orchestrated version by the composer Ravel in 1922:

Discuss how Ravel has transferred the piano part to the orchestra. Notice the instruments, but also discuss how he achieved the exact desired effect by means of dynamics, articulation and texture.

Pictures at an Exhibition (1874). The work depicts a person walking around an art exhibition and reflecting on some of the pieces. The work was written for piano first of all, and then orchestrated by the composer Ravel.

Modest Mussorgsky (1839-1881). One of the so-called Big 5 – the Russian composers who came together with the aim of showcasing the music of their motherland. Leaving the orchestration to another composer was not a terribly odd thing at the time. Mahler scored his own Kindertoten Lieder.
