Composition task 2

Robert Schumann also has a set of pieces called Kinderszenen, which means ‘Scenes from Childhood’.

  • What about composing a set of descriptive pieces on themes that come from your early childhood? Look at the pieces that Schumann wrote.

Be careful, nevertheless, when presenting such a composition as examination coursework. Examiners hope to see some thematic development in your work. Try and present a small motif in your work that changes slightly as the series progresses. One good example is the set called Enigma Variations by the composer Elgar. You can also sample this development from a single motif in step 9 of this unit.
