What exactly is the effect that these chords have? Listen carefully first of all to the simplicity of the music. Then, at the end of the following example, these 9th chords appear to bring this short section to a close with a cadence.

In preparation for a composition, note some advantages or effects that can be created by including rich extended chords. Remember too that there are a number of variations on these chords; some notes may be flattened or sharpened.
