This excerpt has been adapted from the chorale entitled O Lamm Gottes, Unschuldig (number 165 in the Riemenschneider collection) by J S Bach.

  1. Figure 4.1 includes only the meldoy of Bach’s chorale. Add primary and secondary chords for the anacrusis (the note before the first beat of the bar, another name for it is an up-beat).
  2. Figure 4.2 suggests block chords.
  3. 3. In figure 4.3 you have an outline of what J S Bach wrote. Notice how the bass line uses notes that are in the chord – not just the root. That creates a sturdy bass line which contrasts effectively with the melody.
